Welcome to the Future

It is entirely likely that if you read this, you'll be seeing more here over the course of this year. I'm trying to lose some time-consuming bad habits, and as such, I might end up writing more here instead of just doing mindless crap (I'm looking at you amazingly addictive battle-Tetris Facebook app).
I was asked last night if I have any New Year's resolutions, which is a fairly typical question for the 31st of December. Last year I resolved to join a gym, try to read a book a week (and start building up a collection of books), play guitar more, and return phone calls. How'd I do? Joined a gym (twice: one back at home and one here in SF), I read a book a week up until the middle of October when it turned out that's not super practical when I'm in [real] school. Still, 41 books I might not have read otherwise is pretty good. If I recall correctly, I read 25 in 2009, so it's a pretty solid improvement. In addition, I've managed to pick up a lot of books at used bookstores, as gifts, and my library is steadily increasing, which is nice. I've got 147 books on my shelves (I may or may not have just counted them for the sake of accuracy) and I happen to know a couple are loaned out at the moment (bad idea). Phone calls go unreturned much of the time, however. That's not so good. Mostly I don't return them if they're something I don't want to deal with, so that's a big ol' mission unaccomplished for that goal.
This year I'm planning to not waste as much time online, be more assertive, and not avoid unpleasant things. The last one may seem vague, but deal with it. I'm going to keep going to the gym, keep reading (if school allows it), and generally have a productive year. Not to get all weird, but this feels like it's going to be a good year. I refuse to let it be a passive year where I don't get something out of it.
Hell, if Marlie, Kat, and I end up living together, that'll make 2011 possibly the best year of all years, so that would be a pretty decent accomplishment. Basically, 2011 is going to be a year of success. 2011 is going to be the year where "the possible and the impossible meet, to become the possimpible." To borrow Barney Stinson's word.
I could go on (I'm waiting for the freakin' gym to open), but I think I'll just leave you with these thoughts on New Year's from The Lawrence Arms' Chris McCaughan:

Happy New Year!
